LSgt Danny Smith fights for his place in the touring side
The Coldstream Guards football team has
been busy preparing for its forth coming tour of Australia later
this month. The team has warmed up with two friendly games, both
ending in victory. The team
Manager, Major Jasinski (The Quarter Master), announced his
squad after the second game. Inevitably some players were
disappointed, but twenty happy Coldstreamers will shortly be
departing to show the Australians how football should be played.
The teams results will be published in the next letter.

SUPPORT COMPANY CAN! |

Members of Support Company spent a couple of weeks adventure
training in the summer in France. The activities included para-sending,
mountain biking, climbing and white water rafting. Sergeant
‘Butch’ Steel said “ The lads really get stuck in to the
training and enjoy themselves, best of all were getting paid to
do this! Where else do you get that?!”
Captain Dom Clive, leading the expedition said,
“ This really helps to let the lads relax and have a great time
after a hard operational tour.”

ST ANDREWS! |

The Recruiting
Warrant Officer launches one straight down the middle,
well over 300 yards to win the longest drive of the day
The Battalion Golf Society held its Summer Meeting at Oak Park
Golf Club near Aldershot. Thirty Coldstreamers of all standards
took part including The Second-in-Command, the Quarter Master,
the Recruiting Officer, various Warrant Officers and lots of
Guardsmen made up the field. The standard of golf ranged from
excellent to outrageous! Everyone enjoyed themselves, especially
afterwards at the Club Bar.
The Recruiting Warrant Officer, second in command of the Golf
Society, commented that “ It was great to see such a good
turnout, especially from the younger members of the Battalion.
Two rounds of golf and dinner with no charge to the players and
all on a working day!!!”

PUBLIC DUTIES |
|
|
|

The Regiment conducted
a short period of Public Duties in early summer.
After dusting down their bearskins and polishing their boots
Coldstreamers could be seen guarding all the Royal residencies
in London and Windsor, as well as taking part in Trooping the
Colour.

During the summer, the duties
mount for only twenty four hours and each Guardsman will be
stood outside for only two hours. The remainder of the time is
spent as part of a quick reaction force or resting and relaxing.
All meals are eaten inside the palace with other facilities
including; Sky TV, internet access and a gym. Guardsman Knight
23, (right), said “The duties have a bad rep, but it is not that
bad. I do one stag in 24 hours and spend the rest of the time in
the gym or watching TV. My mates at home do 12 hour shifts for
less money than me!”
Imagine the smile on your mothers face when she knows her son is
Guarding the Queen at Buckingham Palace!

FIT |
|
TO |
|
FIGHT |
After summer leave the Companies got stuck into a robust fitness
program. All fitness training is conducted by qualified
instructors and is designed to get the best out of each
individual.

Above: No 7 Company get put through their paces.

Above: The Guscott twins tackle the obstacle course

LSgt Mark (above) abseils from 50m with ease:
LSgt Mark (above) said “Before I joined the Army I had never
abseiled but once I had done it once, it was brilliant! All the
lads had a go, it really builds confidence.”
The Guscott twins (above), joined the Battalion three years ago
and have never looked back. “ We always try to beat each other
which makes the training more fun. The abseiling was excellent
and we get paid to do it!”
Fitness training is hard, but needs to be in order to insure
that each man is capable of doing his job in harsh conditions.
The harder the training, the easier the fight.
Anyone who struggles to keep up or make the times will be given
extra help and advice.

Battalion Exercise November 2008

The Battalion will deploy on Exercise Druid’s Dance on Salisbury
Plain for three weeks in November this year. This will give the
Companies the chance to fight alongside armoured vehicles,
artillery, fast air and other military assets. This exercise is
conducted using lasers on all the weapon systems linked together
with satellites. This makes for realistic training much like a
large scale ‘laser quest’ game.
Specialised Courses

Specialist Courses run by Support Company are happening
throughout the year. Sniping, Mortars, Anti-Tank, Signals, Recce
and Heavy Machine Gun are all available.
If you are good enough, you will be selected and you can
specialise in any of the above.
LCpl Wiggins said “I spent two exciting years in a rifle
Company, which I really enjoyed, but when the opportunity came
for me to join the Snipers I had to jump at the chance! Six
weeks later, I was a badged Sniper.”
