1st Battalion Coldstream Guards
Sergeants Mess
08 Nov 04 - 17 Feb 04

The following information has been submitted by the Regimental Sergeant Major.

The social calendar prior to leave was filled with the annual Christmas events. They started with a memorable “Hanging the Brick” in which the Battalions LCpls and Gdsm put up many valiant attempts to relieve the Sgts of the treasured brick for ransoming purposes. Entertainment was provided by the one man band of CSgt Coates who performed a set of tunes to be proud of. This event was followed by a kind invitation from the Officers’ Mess to celebrate with a drink after yet another victory for the Sgts in the annual football match. To many it was a welcome relief when, by kind permission of the Commanding Officer the Bn departed on leave two days early.

Preparation for Op Telic 6 has become the Bn’s main effort. We are at present preparing with 127 Dragon Battery RA, A Company Staffords who form part of the ever enlarging Coldstream Battle Group. Integration between the different Messes has run very smoothly with a welcome curry lunch and various social gatherings. I look forward to continuing this goodwill throughout our deployment together in Basrah.

After 24years service to the Regiment WOI (RSM) Karl Cheesbrough decided it was time to settle down. He left for his home town of Hull as the Bn departed on Leave. The Sgt’s Mess said farewell to Karl and Jackie during the pre Christmas festivities, both had been staunch Mess attendees and will be sadly missed. Good luck in the future from all Mess members.

Congratulations to WOII (RQMS) Neil Sprot who, on promotion takes up his new appointment as the RSM, Phase Two Instructors School, Lichfield, the Recruiting Warrant Officer WOII  “Dutch” Elms who commissioned into the AAC, WOII  (RCWO) Shaun Mancrief  who is promoted to become the Food Service WOI 143 BDE. We also said farewell to WOII (RQMS) Andy James who takes up his new appointment as RQMS at Regimental Headquarters.
