Having been out of Barracks for the day in March I was delighted to discover
on my
return, that I had been selected to arrange the Regimental Association Day
to he held at Victoria Barracks on the 8th of July. 1 judged that there was
much to do and arrange, to ensure that the day was to be a success.
For those not old enough to remember, the Coldstream Association day was to
he based loosely on the old “Coldstream Shoot”. This used to he held at the
Guards Depot in Pirbright. The aim being, to gather together as many serving
and ex Coldstreamers and their families as possible to make use of the
ranges, hence the term ‘the Coldstream shoot” and for all the families to
have a fun and entertaining day at the same time.
The aim of the Coldstream Association day 2006 was to he much similar and as
a result of the need to plan I gathered together a group of key individuals
from the Battalion and with some help with liaison with the association
branches and booking of civilian entertainers from RHQ, the day began to
take shape.
As a result of the weather we were enjoying in July and the need to minimise
those required to work on the actual day, by Friday the 7th most of the
preparatory work was done and we eagerly awaited the arrival of the
professional entertainers and association stalls on the Saturday to allow
them to set up. They duly arrived and with a little last minute rejigging
and accommodating of last minute requests, all fell into place and with the
sunshine literally smiling on us we were set for a most memorial day. Those
who attended were enthralled by the falconry and dog displays and the Second
Battalion Coldstream Guards re-enactment detachment were well received. For
those retired the Regimental Band is always most popular at such events and
this was no exception. The children’s area, side shows and stalls were well
patronised by all, as of course was the beer tent! The shoot conducted in
the indoor range proved to
be a success with many still regarding themselves as retaining their
“snipers eye”.
Thankfully everything went off without a hitch with the exception of a minor
misdemeanour committed by one of the birds from the falconry acts who
clearly hadn’t been briefed. When he was supposed to return to his handler
he defiantly perched on a Bedford canvass for what must have seemed to the
poor chap an absolute age. He finally did come down having been promised
first pickings at the BBQ and a jar of bees for him and his feathered
friends to share on the journey home.
Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who
assisted me in setting up the association day for their hard work and also
all who attended making the day such an occasion. Testament to this is the
large number of thank you letters subsequently received.
