3 COMPANY, 1ST BATTALION COLDSTREAM GUARDS PRE-DEPLOYMENT
MESSAGE
Following 7 months of arduous and challenging pre-deployment
training 3 Company, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards is now
complete and fit to deploy to Afghanistan. The men leave over
the next week and will be ready to start operations within a few
days of arrival. The Company consisting of 120 men, 19 of which
are Welsh Guardsmen, has a multitude of skills all of which will
be essential in our role in Afghanistan. Every soldier will be
essential in ensuring the Company is to be as successful as
possible throughout our time in Afghanistan.
As the Task Force Helmand (52 Brigade) Operations Company we
have no set area to operate within. The Company could be
deployed anywhere within Helmand Province as well as the
neighbouring province of Kandahar. In terms of tasks, we are
likely to be involved in surge operations on the Task Force
Helmand main effort and operations where the Force as a whole
needs to have most impact. The Company will be involved in some
of the most challenging and demanding operations.
3 Company is going to be based in Camp Bastion, the largest base
within Helmand situated in the centre of the province. However,
such is our role we are unlikely to spend much time within Camp
Bastion itself. This base will be used as logistic and
administrative support location from where supplies can be sent
forward to wherever the Company might be. When we do return to
Camp Bastion it will be for short periods to recover and
reorganise before deploying out again on operations.
During the tour new messages and pictures will be posted on this
website to keep families and friends up to date with what the
Company is up to. A variety of men will be asked to write
articles to ensure every level of view is put across thereby
giving the most complete and honest picture.
Every man now deploys to Afghanistan in the knowledge that he
has received 7 months training in preparation for this tour.
This said the jobs we are going to undertake will challenge all
individuals in ways they have not previously experienced. The
men will work long hours under pressure and be expected to make
decisions which could have major implications at the operational
and potentially strategic level.
However, confident in the training we have received 3 Company is
well-equipped to deal with all that Afghanistan will throw at us
over the next 6 months.
