Captain Peter Dale, Coldstream Guards, is currently serving in Afghanistan (Kabul) with Number One Company, and is the Officer in charge of the 'Hearts & Minds' Campaign.  This appeal is aimed specifically at the children of Afghanistan who are suffering in many ways.

Northampton Chron & Echo

A former serviceman from Northamptonshire has appealed for donations to help improve attitudes towards British troops in Afghanistan.

Simon Peck, who served in the first battalion of Coldstream Guards in the 1980s, was approached by Captain Dale in Kabul, Afghanistan to help support the 'hearts and minds' initiative, which seeks to promote goodwill towards Afghan communities.

Mr Peck, who is now a member of the Northampton branch of the Coldstream Guards Association, said: "The initiative is to improve Afghan attitudes towards our troops because this in turn helps save our troops' lives.

Simon Peck, who is collecting donations to help British troops in Afghanistan

"The soldiers give out clothes, stationery and toiletries to residents to change their attitudes towards the soldiers."

Members of the Kabul Patrols Company of the first battalion of Coldstream Guards have asked for stationery, warm clothing, toiletries such as toothpaste, and cash donations to help soldiers win over public opinion in Afghanistan.

The regiment is also looking for volunteers to be pen pals for Afghan children.

Military vehicles will collect the donations at a later date and anyone who would like to help can send donations to:

GUARDS IN KABUL MAKE GIFTS PLEA

BY JENNY OUSBEY
10:30 - 11 February 2008

Leicestershire soldiers serving in Afghanistan have made an appeal for donations of gifts to help the Afghan people.

Members of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, fighting in Kabul, have asked Leicester Mercury readers to send in things such as pencils, pens, notebooks and toothpaste, so they can hand them out.

They say by doing so they will create goodwill in the communities they are serving, and ultimately the gestures could save lives.

Captain Pete Dale, of the Coldstream Guards, spoke to the Mercury from Camp Souter in Kabul. He said: "We have done the best part of four months here and so far we haven't lost anybody, but we have had a couple of soldiers injured.

"The Company is in fine fettle and working hard in Kabul fighting terrorism and al Qaida.

"We want people to send in pens, pencils and notebooks, as well as warm clothing, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

"It would also be good to have cash to buy things, like washing lines to cement - anything to help the daily lives of Afghans."

Anyone interested in being a pen pal with an Afghan child can also write in through Capt Pete Dale and his successor, who will be Capt Bobby Walsh, of 2nd Battalion Scottish Regiment.

Simon Peck, ex-member of the Coldstream Guards, is now an active member of the Leicester Coldstream Branch Association and is organising the Leicester end of the campaign.

He said: "The heart and minds initiative is to show goodwill towards the Afghans and improve their attitude towards our troops. This in turn helps save our troops' lives."

Leicestershire soldiers have also spoken of how they are missing home.

LCpl Stuart Taylor, 24, of Melton Mowbray, is a team commander and has served with the battalion for about four years.

He said: " I receive a lot of support from my family and they are all very proud of what I do."

Gdsm Paul Hydon, 21, of Hinckley, is a former pupil of John Cleveland College. He joined the Army after leaving school and has already served in Iraq twice.

He said: "The local people out here are very supportive of our presence in the capital city and are happy we are keeping the Taliban in hiding!"

The Guards finish their tour of Afghanistan in April.

* All donations of goodwill should be sent to: The Coldstream Guards Afghanistan Appeal, c/o Glen Gorse Golf Club, Glen Road, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 4RF.

A platoon from Windsor will send military vehicles to collect the donations at a later date.
