Battalion Sitrep as at 14 Oct 07
(Archive)
This e-mail is designed as the first of many updates on the
deployment of Coldstreamers throughout Helmand Province and
Kabul. It is hoped that once Comms are more mature, that the
updates will be more detailed.
The majority of the Battalion have now deployed to theatre.
There have of course, been a few last minute changes but the
deployment has gone relatively smoothly and the RAF deserve
credit for a job well done. Plans within theatre have proved
fluid for some whilst others have arrived to the jobs they were
pretty much expecting.
Number 1 Company are currently settling in to Camp Souter
in Kabul under the Command of Major Wayne Hennessy-Barrett. By
all accounts they will be kept very busy conducting framework
patrolling and force protection tasks. They will also
doubtlessly be relatively comfortable being co-located with HO
ISAF. The camp there has been established for over 5 years now
and it is well served with welfare and accommodation facilities.
Number 3 Company are currently flying into theatre and
will undergo their Reception Staging and Onward Integration (RSOI)
package in Camp Bastion before almost immediate deployment onto
the ground in BG (N) ‘s AO. Major Tom Charles is currently
conducting his recce of his AO and will be joined by the
remainder of his Company shortly.
A number of personnel are deployed at 52 Brigade HO based out
of Lashkar Gar (LKG). These include the Commanding Officer
who heads up a team involved in Security Sector Reform. This
essentially works at creating the conditions that will
ultimately enable us all to leave and let the properly trained,
established and led Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) take
over. Captain Pepper, the RSO, is serving as his S03. The
Sergeant Major is also based in LKG and is S03 10 (B) within the
HO. 2Lt Mark Hayhurst is working with D Coy 2 YORKS from LKG
with his Platoon of Coldstreamers. They will be conducting
framework patrolling in and around LKG as well as providing
force protection for Bde HO and also the High Readiness Force (HRF)
for the Bde AO. A number of other Coldstreamers also serve in
Bde HO including Sgt Walton, working in the OM Dept and two
multiples from the Recce Platoon working out of LKG and Gereshk
(GSK) as Police Mentoring Teams (PMTs). Both of these are very
busy and spend large amounts of time out on the ground and
providing mentoring to the Afghan Uniformed Police Services.
Right Flank are currently out within their A0 operating
out of a Patrol Base. Warrior seems to have been something of a
success within Helmand and has a vital role to play. Captain
Toby Davison is currently the senior Coldstream Officer with
them following Lt Charles Malet being injured just over a month
ago.
The Mortars are currently divided between BC (N), 40 Cdo,
and providing support to BG(C) the DANBAT. Captain Dominic Clive
is located in Gereshk with the Danish providing intimate fire
support to that unit which lacks mortars. OC Support Company,
Major John Brinn is based out of Camp Shorabak next door to
Bastion with a small team if mentors. Working to the OMLT
(Operational Mentoring & Liaison Team) BG, 2 YORKS, they are
busy helping to equip, train and lead elements of the Afghan
National Army (ANA).
With regards from all Coldstreamers in Afghanistan,
George Waters
