No 7 Company - March from Coldstream to London, 6th-30th
January 2010 To
commemorate the 350th anniversary of General Monck’s
monumental march from Coldstream to London in 1650,
Number Seven Company Coldstream Guards will repeat the
event in January 2010 setting off from Coldstream on 6th
January and arriving at Tower Hill, London, on 30
January 2010, thus completing the march some 8 days
quicker than their forebears. The Regimental Lieutenant
Colonel will be in Coldstream to see the Company off.
“The town of
Coldstream, because the General did it the honour to
make it the place of his residence for some time, hath
given title to a small company of men whom God made the
instruments of great things; and though poor, yet honest
as ever corrupt nature produced into the world, by the
no dishonourable name of Coldstreamers.”
Thomas Gumble
Number 7 Company will depart from Woolwich am 5 January
2010 and travel to Berwick upon Tweed where they will
spend the night in The Barracks. At 0700 on 6th January
they will move by coach to Coldstream and at 0900 they
will set off from Henderson Park led by the Old
Coldstreamers Corps of Drums who will fall out at the
England/Scotland border. A map of the route taken by
General Monck is attached with the route to be taken by
Number 7 Company shown in red ink.
The aims of this exercise are fourfold:
a. To commemorate the 350th anniversary of General Monck’s march to
London by recreating it within modern parameters.
b. To conduct an arduous long distance march within the UK using current
military equipment.
c. Conduct a high profile media and charity campaign to assist the Field
Army and the First Battalion Coldstream Guards who will
be deployed in Afghanistan.
d. Raise a minimum of £250,000 to be split equally between The Army
Benevolent Fund and The Coldstream Guards Charitable
Funds.
A number of media avenues have been investigated and
it is hoped that the march will be covered by national
and local newspapers and national and local TV stations.
A
Message from Number 7 Company
On the 02 January 1660 General George Monck gathered his men and
marched from the town of Coldstream to London. To mark the 350th
anniversary of this historic event Number Seven Company will also
march from Coldstream to London along a similar route - some
400miles (approx 25 miles a day)! We will also live under canvas for
some of the march in the inclement British weather in January. This
will be an extremely arduous achievement for all participants and we
hope, if nothing else, only to raise awareness of the good work that
soldiers are performing abroad on Operations.
Any money raised will go some way in helping injured soldiers and
families affected by the death or wounding of their loved ones. Fund
allocations will benefit those individuals whose life has had a
dramatic change be it through injury or mourning or even just
adapting to a new way of living. Many of you will have read about
those soldiers who have unfortunately been killed whilst on
operations. Few have read about those that return limbless, blinded
or in some way changed.
Our march will be difficult and uncomfortable, but we will recover
quickly - these funds raised will help those who will never return
to their normal life, however much they try.
This exercise will without doubt attract many visitors,
both military and civilian. Invites will also be sent to
various celebrities and sportspersons who may be well
known for their involvement with charity or endurance
disciplines to march with the company to both raise the
profile of the event and help inspire the guardsmen.
Officer Commanding (OC) 7 Company is happy for
Association members to visit the Company’s camp sites
between 1900 – 2100hrs and a copy of the overnight sites
is attached.

Many thanks to Alan Hughes, the vicar or Berwick
for these images, the following message was received
with the images:
"I would be very grateful if you could include these two
attached pictures in the first day account of the Long
March on the site - one is of the original entry in the
Guild Book of Berwick (see transcript below) and the
other of the service held in Berwick Parish Church,
built by Monck's men and wherein our 2nd Bn Colours are
laid up, with The Mayor of today on the right and Major
James Coleby on the left.
The Berwick Guild Book for 1660 records that : "An
emergency meeting of the Guild was called 2nd January,
as The Mayor had had reported to him by a friend that
The Lord General Monck had left Coldstream. It was
agreed that a letter be sent to The Lord General
assuring him that Town was at his service. The letter to
be delivered by Alderman Watson, Mr Pratt, Mr Webb and
Mr Jackson."

Here are a few images of the lads arriving in Selby on
the 15th Jan and entering the Town Hall where a mini
civic reception was held for them by the Town Mayor.
Selby did them proud, local shoppers cheered them
through the town centre then they were given hot drinks
and biscuits plus a few beers for the night.

The following message accompanied the images:
The Boys entered Doncaster this afternoon on their way
South. At 6C the weather was almost "Sub Tropical"
compared to what they had been through recently. A
welcome party of members from the Doncaster Branch of
the Association with their Banner were prepared for
their arrival.
The Boys had a tremendous welcome as they marched over
the North Bridge into Town to be greeted by many members
of the General public who had turned out to see them.
They swelled the coffers of the collection buckets in
true Yorkshire generosity. The Boys then marched
to the steps of only the third Mansion House in the
country to be greeted by The Lady Mayoress and her
party. The Boys assembled for a Photo Call and were
given a wonderful greeting from both the dignitaries and
again members of the public.
Mr Ken Pearson Chairman of the Doncaster Branch and Mr
Brian Ridley Secretary got in on the Act with the now
famous Banner and can be seen with the Lady Mayoress who
even held a collection bucket Well Done.
The Boys will be having a well earned rest overnight in
Doncaster before heading South again in the morning.
Well Done Boys we were all so proud of you.
Bon Voyage

they will be putting pictures into paper on Monday as
well as video footage that they have taken.
