Apologies for the delay in updating.
Firstly, our sincere apologies for the delay in updating this
site and indeed adding an Afghanistan section to ShinyCapstar.
We made a decision well before the Battalion deployed that we
would not add any information to ShinyCapstar regarding the
Battalion's tour to Afghanistan, this information would ONLY be
uploaded to the Coldstream
ArmyNet
Site. As all will (or should) know,
ArmyNet
is a secure section of the MOD Internet where units can hold
their own site, the down side is that only those with a username
and password (Military, dependants and those with guest
accounts) can access and view sites.
Why did we do this you may ask? Well,
ArmyNet
has been around for a good few years and is developing into a
fantastic asset to those that can access it. We were very
conscious that a large number of families and dependants had not
created accounts and were missing out on this fantastic tool. We
therefore decided that updates would only go onto
ArmyNet
to to 'nudge' everyone into creating accounts.
Although we are very much aware that regular viewers of
ShinyCapstar suffered with no updates, our main aim was to
ensure that we had a line of direct communication with families
and dependants - and it worked. We have had tremendous positive
feedback from many viewers of the
ArmyNet
Site and it is currently a Unit 'Spot Light Site' and has a
direct link to the Coldstream Site from
ArmyNet
as one of the most 'Popular Pages'. This shows of the following,
genuine interest and 'love' of the Coldstream Guards! We will
now endeavour to keep the site updated with images and
information from Afghanistan although we CAN GUARANTEE that any
news displayed on this site WILL be at least 3 weeks old due to
security implications (in other words, if you want the latest
news from Planet Coldstream -

ArmyNet Account).

Tommy Leech Appeal - Can
you Help?

L/Sgt. Carl Leech who lost his life in a car accident travelling
home to Middlesbrough from his post at Catterick. Not only did
he leave a widow but a very young son Tommy who tragically was
born without ears and hearing, operations to rectify this could
not be done till he reached the age of 10. Tommy has now
undergone tests which determined that this is possible, but can
only be done in Germany at the cost of £50,000.

ShinyCapstar - Site
Updates
For those of you that frequent ShinyCapstar on a regular basis
(and there are a lot of you), the site will shortly be having
another 're-vamp'. I have been working on a new front page
for a little while now as I think that it is looking a little
'cluttered'. Hopefully, the revamp won't be too long. but
I though it was a priority in getting the Afghan Section
together first ...................... I'll keep you posted.

>> ShinyCapstar YouTube Account!
Obviously, without not trying to be
outdone with all the technological advances, ShinyCapstar has
it's own 'YouTube' account for any Coldstream Videos that have
been created. If you haven't already seen the Regimental
Recruiting DVD you can watch it online on our 'YouTube' account
(it's brilliant!), all this plus clips from recent events and
functions, plus loads more to come! (you can also subscribe to the YouTube
account to be told when new videos are added) - the
videos on the YouTube Account have had over 10,000
views since Oct 06, that is outstanding so more
videos will be added on a regular basis.
At the time of going to press, the ShinyCapstar
Channel has the following videos, with more to come:
The Regimental Recruiting Video.
The Coldstream Guards Op Telic Fun Run.
I'm a Coldstreamer's Wife, Get me out of Here
weekend.
Videos from the last Regimental Association Day.
A recent news video from Exercise African Thorn.
Plus lots more on the site and more due to be added!
If you have a video that you'd like to appear on our
channel, send it to us and we'll see if it's suitable to
hold pride and place on 'THE' Coldstream Video Channel!

Coldstream Kids - Walking
the Walk!
What
seemed like a good idea at the time, the Welfare Officer and
Welfare Senior Non Commissioned Officer recently took part in a
charity walk for
Coldstream Kids. The walk was the length of
Hadrian's Wall,
yes we (or I) had very sore feet,
Read more about it here.
A book has also been published (e-book, not professionally) by
one of the walkers, and is available to
download and read FREE
of charge! And you have our full permission to distribute
this to anyone you wish to help promote the

>> Update
News - General:
Since the last update in November, the Battalion have been
involved in a number of things from Public Duties to Exercises
in Spain and Africa just to name a few. As this update
goes live it will have seen the Battalion deep into the training
programme that is extremely tense and demanding with trips now
to less glamorous locations such as Salisbury and Otterburn.
An article was recently published in the press and asked what drove
soldiers to still join the British Army , with all the 'negative' media that is
currently being aired. I am sure that their answer would be the
same response if asking a Coldstreamer who is yet to face many
of the demanding tasks ahead of him in the next couple of
months, these values are not taught to us but planted in
training and left to grow inside each and every one of us. Until
the day you realise whilst stood on the Parade Square or Battle
Field of what trust you place in the men stood shoulder to
shoulder to you.
All Coldstream Guardsmen have an ethos, and values of the
British Army and indeed Regiment, all of which are held close to
the heart of all members past and present, these are:
SELFLESS COMMITMENT: putting others before themselves.
COURAGE: facing up to the threat and knowing and doing
what is the right thing to do.
DISCIPLINE: maintaining the standards that are expected,
so that others can rely on them.
INTEGRITY: earning the respect and trust of colleagues
and comrades.
LOYALTY: to be faithful colleagues and comrades and to
their duty.
RESPECT FOR OTHERS: always treating others with decency
and respect at all times.
All soldiers agree to uphold the ethos and standards of the
British Army, and most need not to be reminded of these values
that come natural to them!
Please note, the words above are of
the webmaster and are not necessarily the words expressed from
the Battalion.

>>Did you Know?
The Welfare Office
have had to organise a few functions in the past and managed to
get hold of details for an Entertainments Agency who if the
motto wasn't taken up by the Regiment they would surely have it
(second to none). If you are a PMC of a Mess, or just need
some entertainment give Krystina a call - they'll do their best
to help!
For more details on this fantastic Entertainments Agency,
who can provide anything - believe me - anything,
please give Krystina a call on 0118 986 4135 or 07831 635662.
Other details and entertainment packages can be found on the
website at
www.Krystina.co.uk. The
Battalion made one call to this agency and everything was done
for us - thoroughly recommended!
Please mention that you saw this info on ShinyCapstar if you
use this entertainments agency.

ShinyCapstar News:
Since the last update there has been a fantastic response in the
statement that was made on the closure of ShinyCapstar, e-mails
of support have been received and are now stored to enable us to
get them out to show 'anyone' that needs to know how 'valuable'
this site is to all of you.
If you never e-mailed in before, the said statement is repeated
below to allow you to partake:
We are unsure if we have a fight to chase (on the closure of
ShinyCapstar), but if you are one of the 'millions' of users
that log onto ShinyCapstar then send us an e-mail to
admin@shinycapstar.com
letting us know what you think, we know that the site receives
thousands of hits per day, so drop us a quick e-mail to let us
know who you are, where you're from and what you think about
ShinyCapstar - we'll stick these in a safe place if needed to
support the popularity of the site!
For anyone who wishes to know the ACTUAL STATS for this
site, please view the tables and charts below.
|
>> ShinyCapstar
Stats:
There will shortly be a number of agencies that will be
looking to sponsor certain sections of ShinyCapstar. The
following
information is provided for these individuals and anyone else
who is interested in seeing how popular ShinyCapstar is and the
fantastic potential of sponsoring it.
Hits Per Month
As you can see from the graphs and statistics to the left,
ShinyCapstar averages 850,000 hits per month throughout all it's
pages (some 250+).
Hits Per Day
An average 27,000 hits per day are received for the site,
generating some 500+ unique visits from users.
Ranking System
ShinyCapstar is highly ranked throughout the majority (if not
all) of the search engines. For example 'Google' ranks
ShinyCapstar in the first 3 when searching for words relating to
the Coldstream Guards. The first site found is the MOD
Army Site for the Coldstream Guards, which has a direct link for
ShinyCapstar. Google finds over 250,000 sites relating to
the Coldstream Guards! ShinyCapstar also has various 'metatags'
which aid it being found by search engines.
Conclusion
ShinyCapstar has been on the scene for a number of years now,
and the tremendous hits and worldwide interest reflects this.
The graph shows a typical year in the life of ShinyCapstar and
any site with a healthy statistic of over 10 million hits should
show how beneficial sponsorship could be to those that are
interested.
If you are interested in sponsoring ShinyCapstar please e-mail
us at
admin@shinycapstar.com, and we'll
do our best to get straight back to you.

ShinyCapstar Message Board News:
The Message Board has been revamped
............................. The old system saw a ranking
system that really was a 'ranking system'. On joining you
started at the bottom and was promoted through the ranks
depending on the amount of posts you made, users started at a
'Chippie La La' and went through the
ranks
eventually reaching those dizzy Officer Ranks. Although it
was very popular, this ranking system has now been dropped in
favour of a new ranking system, which awards medals depending on
the number of posts the member has made - starting off
with 'Mess Tins Slung' and eventually being able to gain a
'ShinyCapstar'.
An example of the medals that 'could' be gained is shown to the
left, with various medals being awarded at each stage of post
count. This has been in effect for a couple of months now
and seems to be popular.
More info on the medals
ranking system can be found by clicking here.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE
The quickest way (and proven way) to post Coldstream
News to everyone will be on the message board so keep an eye out
for new posts and also check out the
Coldstream News Section,
where local news sites are trawled to find anything Coldstream.

It had to happen - being outdone, outsmarted and beaten in

sport, something that had not been tried yet, who won - who

Welfare Office
Events -
OVER 100 IMAGES HAVE
BEEN ADDED TO THESE SECTIONS!
A number of Welfare Office Events recently took place, all
organised by the Welfare Office supported by the Wives Club.
All should be thanked for their continued support in all of
these events, without this none of the functions would have been
the successes they were!
For more info on these events please click
here.
Ladies Dinner Night - In February, the Wives
Club with support from the Welfare Office, organised a Ladies
Dinner Night. This was a brilliant success, and those asked that
attended said it was one of the ‘best nights for a long time’.
The function took place in the Wakefield Bar in Barracks, and
some 60+ attended for a night of entertainment, food, a raffle,
lots of excitement and finishing off with ‘Nobby’s Disco
Delights’. The function started with free drinks at the bar, and
moved onto an first-rate curry buffet (provided by the
excellence of the catering department). The entertainment
package came in the form of a talented & gifted hypnotist, who
managed to convince certain participants that they were on a
very hot beach (no clothes were removed), had won the lottery,
and had a best friend as a little fairy that lived in a packet
of lambert and butler – who was then ‘squashed’ by the hypnotist
much to the dismay and upset of everyone………………confused? you had
to be there!
For more info on this event please click
here.
Children's Party - Back in January, the Welfare Office
unfortunately had to cancel a children's party that was planned
due to low attendance and operational commitments. However, it
was promised that the event itself would not be cancelled but
postponed, and put on again on another date.

Coldstream/ShinyCapstar
News for November 2006
*REALLY, REALLY HUGE UPDATE!*
|
>> Update
News - General:
The Battalion have had a very busy time of the last couple of
months, as you can see from the links and information below.
From Exercises to Adventure Training - and Association Days to
Mr Coldstream, not forgetting a few functions and events thrown
in for wives to attend, read on for info of just what's been
updated - and don't forget to visit the 'Second to None'
Regimental Recruiting Section for all the latest Battalion News.
This will be the last update this year (before breaking for
Christmas), but the Competition Section (see below) will still
be active - hopefully there will be more updates to follow after
this? (see below)
>>
ShinyCapstar News:
There has been tremendous interest in the talk that ShinyCapstar
will close, and many supportive e-mails. To explain to all that
wish to know the future of ShinyCapstar, and the reasons behind
these statements, I will try to explain.
As all are very much aware,
this site belongs to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, ran by
a Coldstreamer - for Coldstreamers. When first created back in
2001 it had the full intention of being a portal of Coldstream
information, as an addition to all those other Coldstream sites
out there. The site then developed (due to it's popularity) into
diary/blog of past events from the Coldstream Guards.
As mentioned previously, this
site is ran by the Battalion and is held on a civilian sever (an
bonus to this is that we have full control of adding extra bits
of kit like shout boxes, message & picture boards etc). But,
because of this - it must become an UNOFFICIAL SITE because it
does not run from the MOD server. Official sites are held on the
MOD server for all Regiments and Corp's, and the Coldstream
Guards have a 'generic site'
HERE.
By making this an unofficial site it
falls under certain criteria of what is allowed, or disallowed
on an unofficial site, this is all explained in relevant
documentation that is currently being 'digested'.
The Commanding Officer 1st Battalion
Coldstream Guards is aware that this site falls under the hat of
being an 'unofficial' site and at the moment we are awaiting
guidance and confirmation of how the site can move forward,
depending on what is allowed to be on the site.
Another point to make is that with
the current techy breakthroughs, a site has been formulated
called ArmyNet (held at
www.ArmyNet.Mod.Uk),
this site allows 'members' of the British Army to log in and
check certain details such as Company Information, Pay
Statements etc, so it is inevitable that the site will require
Regimental Information - a point to note is that ArmyNet is only
available if you are serving in the Armed Forces, or if you are
a dependant of the Armed Forces.
***We are unsure if we have a fight to chase, but if you are
one of the 'millions' of users that log onto ShinyCapstar then
send us an e-mail to
admin@shinycapstar.com
letting us know what you think, we know that the site receives
thousands of hits per day, so drop us a quick e-mail to let us
know who you are, where you're from and what you think about
ShinyCapstar - we'll stick these in a safe place if needed to
support the popularity of the site!
>>
Competition Section:
Please also be aware that a new section will start shortly on
ShinyCapstar having regular competitions, with fantastic prizes
to be won. These competitions will be FREE to enter, all that
you will be required to do before hand is join the message board
(as this is where the information will be held). From then, you
will enter the competition via e-mail and if you're a lucky
winner - the prize will be sent to you!
Prizes are still to be confirmed as sponsors will be approached
shortly to ask of they would like to sponsor the competition
pages, in return a link and information will be shown - these
sponsors will be a tremendous asset to the site so take time to
visit them as you never know, you could find something on the
site that you've been after for 'ages'!

Welfare Functions:
The Welfare Office (in conjunction with the Wives Club) recently
organised a number of events for wives of Coldstreamers (or
attached personnel), the main effort in these functions were to
try and bring the 'Coldstream Community' closer during this busy
period - from feedback received, all were a success.
Cheese & Wine Party - This was a low key event
organised in the Community Centre on the married quarters
estate. A total of 50+ wives turned in for the event where they
had the opportunity to speak to the MHS Liaison Officer, the
Padre, the Welfare Officer, the Army Welfare Service Staff, Hive
Staff together with local staff from crèche facilities.
The Master Chef provided an
outstanding service in the form of a buffet that could have fed
Robin Hood and his Merry Men three nights over, and the QM
(Major Hall) again excelled in providing a copious amount of
wine for all those that attended. The food and wine was all FREE
to those that attended!
I'm a Coldstreamers Wife - Get me out of here! -
This was an event organised by the RSM and his exercise staff,
being an adventure weekend for any wives that wished to attend,
taking place in 'the jungles of Berkshire'. The event started on
Friday evening and finished on Sunday afternoon, the feedback
received from wives that attended the event were that 'it is the
best thing I have ever done!'.

this event,
