CHURCH PARADES, FAREWELL TO FRIENDS, KNESSIE HUNTING AND WET BIKERS!
(Thursday 24 September 2009)

WARNING!
This update features Hundreds of images and loads of words - make a cuppa and get yourself comfy!!

The past couple of weeks have seen the Battalion complete Afghanistan Pre Deployment Preparation and Training, which took place in various locations around the Country including the newly built village of Sindh Kalay in Thetford, Norfolk.  All training has been invaluable and has brought the Battalion up to it’s peak ready for deployment.

An article regarding the village at Thetford was published previously here.

PRE-DEPLOYMENT CHURCH SERVICE:

The local residents of Aldershot saw Queens Avenue brought to a standstill as the Battalion marched from New Mons Barracks to attend the Pre-Deployment Church Service at the RC Cathedral of St Michael & St George in early September.

The Battalion formed on the square prior to the event and marched to the service, accompanied in Regimental Style by the Corps of Drums.

After the service the Battalion, led by the Commanding Officer, marched onto the main drill square and saluted the Colonel of the Regiment.

The Colonel of the Regiment also paid a quick visit to the Sergeants' Mess and managed to chat to a few of the mess members

COLDSTREAM KIDS – GREAT GLEN WAY SPONSORED CHALLENGE 2009:

Congratulations must go to Franco (founder of Coldstream Kids) and the team that have just completed the 2009 challenge for Coldstream Kids, raising funds for Coldstream Kids.

The team completed the challenge, walking the 2009 route, which spanned 73 miles/117km between Fort William and Inverness (Scotland), and allowed the team to take on some breathtaking scenery of ‘bonny Scotland’ – Nessie however, was not seen.

There are some fantastic images and accounts from each day on the walk that are very good reading indeed, these can be found on the links below.

PLEASE – if doing your bit for Coldstream Kids is only reading about the event and passing the info onto others it will be enough.

For more information on Coldstream Kids please see: http://www.coldstreamkids.org.uk/

FAMILIES, PARENTS & PARTNERS BATTALION OPEN DAY:

The Battalion recently opened our gates to an open day to brief and show families, parents and partners on the Battalion’s forthcoming tour of Afghanistan.

The even had been planned by the Welfare Office and saw hundreds come through the front gates of New Mons Barracks to be briefed on the tour.  Lunch was laid on for all and everyone was invited to jump in some of the vehicles that will be used on tour, handle specialised weapons that platoons will use and also look at the uniform and kit that Battalion Personnel use.

There were also face painters, the Battalion climbing wall and not forgetting our very own Corps of Drums that provided an outstanding display of pageantry, discipline and perfection.

See images from the day here …..

BATTALION SPRINT TRIATHLON
:

The Battalion recently organised an inter-company Triathlon in and around Aldershot.  The event was very well attended and supported by the Battalion.

WOII (Company Sergeant Major) Steve Taylor (CSM of number 1 Company) devised the idea of the Battalion Triathlon whilst munching on a McChicken Sandwich a few weeks ago.  As the Company’s were already head first in Afghanistan Training it was an ideal way for all to test their fitness and also have a little competitive sport between the Company’s (including a team from Brigade).

After a quick con-flab with the resident fitness guru (SSgt Mark Allen – Bn PTI Prawn) it was suggested that the event be delayed as Mark had fallen off his bike a few days prior whilst trying to protect some ducks from crossing Queens Avenue (the hero that he is).  It would take a few days for the pain in his buttocks (mainly coccyx) to disperse but then he should be ready.  As days passed Mark decided that he would take on an Administration Role and not compete as the pain “kept coming back just thinking about them ducks!”.
